Basements collect everything: old furniture, holiday decorations, paint cans, boxes nobody has opened in a decade. In Michigan, many also deal with dampness or past flooding, which turns stored cardboard and carpet into a mess.

This checklist breaks the job into steps you can finish in a weekend.

Quick answer

  • Plan one weekend for an average basement.
  • Sort into five piles: keep, sell, donate, recycle, toss.
  • Keep hazardous items out of the dumpster: paint, chemicals, propane tanks and batteries.
  • Most basements need a 10- or 20-yard dumpster. Finished basements with carpet and drywall often need a 20 or 30.

Step 1: Plan before you lift anything

  • Pick a weekend and line up one or two helpers.
  • Clear a path from the basement stairs to the driveway.
  • Book the dumpster to arrive the day before you start.
  • Set out boxes and bags labeled Keep, Sell, Donate, Recycle, Toss.
  • Have gloves, dust masks, contractor bags, a utility knife and a flashlight ready.

Step 2: Check for water damage and mold first

Look along the walls, floor and under boxes before you start moving things.

  • Wet or musty cardboard, carpet and fabric: usually best to toss. Moisture keeps spreading.
  • Visible mold on walls or furniture: wear an N95 mask and gloves. Large areas should be checked by a mold professional.
  • Water stains on the floor or walls: note them so you can fix the cause, such as gutters, grading or a sump pump, after the cleanout.

Step 3: Work in zones

Don't try to sort the whole basement at once. Clear one zone at a time:

  1. Storage shelves and boxes
  2. Furniture and large items
  3. Workbench and tools
  4. Laundry and utility area
  5. Under the stairs and corners

Finish one zone before starting the next. You'll see progress fast, and the dumpster gets filled more evenly.

Step 4: Sort into five piles

PileWhat goes in it
KeepItems you've used in the last year or truly need
SellWorking furniture, tools, bikes, exercise equipment
DonateClothes, toys, books, kitchenware in good shape
RecycleScrap metal, cardboard, electronics
TossBroken furniture, water-damaged items, old carpet, junk

For ideas on what's worth selling or donating, see our guides on what to sell before you toss and donating before a cleanout.

Step 5: Set aside items that can't go in a dumpster

These need separate disposal:

  • Paint, stains and solvents
  • Pool and lawn chemicals
  • Propane tanks
  • Car batteries and lithium batteries
  • Motor oil and antifreeze
  • Fluorescent bulbs

Most Michigan counties run household hazardous waste drop-offs or collection days. Check your county's website. See the full list in what can and can't go in a dumpster.

Step 6: Load the dumpster the smart way

  • Put flat, heavy items first: old doors, shelving, broken furniture.
  • Break down furniture to save space.
  • Fill gaps with bags and smaller junk.
  • Keep everything below the top edge of the container.

  • Schedule the dumpster pickup.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a basement cleanout take? Most take one to two days with two people. Packed basements or estate cleanouts can take longer. See our estate cleanout guide.

Can I throw away old carpet in a dumpster? Yes. Cut it into rolls about 4 feet wide and tape them so they load easily.

Is a rubber-wheeled dumpster better for my driveway? It can be. See roll-off vs. rubber-wheeled dumpsters.
