What does the roofing calculator use?

It asks how many squares, how many layers are coming off, and the shingle type.

A square is about 100 square feet.

Weight is squares times layers times pounds per square, divided by 2,000.

Volume is about 0.35 cubic yards per square per layer.

The average-roof example uses 20 squares, so one layer of 3-tab asphalt is 2.3 tons.

That 2.3-ton figure is the 20-square, one-layer, 3-tab example. Use your own square count.

Roofing materials we ask about are asphalt shingles, wood shingles, metal, synthetic, and slate.

Pounds per square on this page cover 3-tab, architectural, and cedar or wood.

Which roll-off sizes are for a tear-off?

Normal roofing uses a 10, 20, or 30 yard roll-off. All three include 14 days. Extra days are $25.

The 40-yard is the maximum volume size. It has the same 5-ton capacity as the 30-yard.

For a normal roof, stay with a 10, 20, or 30 yard.

If the tear-off is heavy, read the included weight before you size up.

Read the included weight on the address quote.

Shingles use the roofing quote.

The $350 refundable deposit is for qualifying online 10-yard orders of dirt, soil, concrete, brick, block, masonry, or rock.

Why can a roof fill the weight first?

Shingles are compact. A tear-off can hit the weight allowance while the container still has open space.

The calculator estimates volume and weight. The disposal facility’s scale sets any extra charge.

Included weight is on the address quote.

Two layers multiply both the weight math and the volume math.

Run the squares and the layer count, then match a 10, 20, or 30 yard roll-off.

What should stay out of the roofing dumpster?

Leave these out

  • Hazardous waste
  • Tires
  • Batteries
  • Paint and chemicals
  • Asbestos
  • Flammable materials
  • Propane tanks
  • Medical waste
  • Electronics where restricted

Put dirt, concrete, brick, and rock from a chimney or patio in a 10-yard open-top. Keep them out of a 20, 30, or 40 yard shingle load.

For a roof, use a roll-off.

Load shingles in that roll-off.

What else should you check on the quote?

Check the included weight and the extra-ton rate before the tear-off starts.

Architectural shingles use about 280 pounds per square. Cedar or wood uses about 350.

Two layers double that weight arithmetic and double the 0.35 cubic yard volume factor.

The quote allowance is the number that matters for the bill.

A 40-yard is 40 ft x 8 ft x 4.5 ft, with the same 5-ton capacity as the 30-yard. Your roofing allowance is the number on the quote.

If the roll-off will sit in the street, ask the local authority about a permit.

In Detroit, a permit may be required for street placement. The City Building Department phone is (313) 224-5850.

A driveway is a different question.

The calculator weights here are only for 3-tab, architectural, and cedar or wood.
